Kathmandu: President Ram Chandra Poudel has stated that poverty alleviation, social inclusion, prosperity, and sustainable development are the fundamental pillars of democracy.

Address at Doha Summit

Speaking at a high-level roundtable during the ‘Second World Summit for Social Development’ in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday, President Poudel said that poverty reduction, full and productive employment, and social inclusion are not abstract concepts but the foundation of peace, order, prosperity, and democratic sustainability.

Global Challenges Persist

Despite progress in the past three decades, President Poudel highlighted that many challenges remain in the field of social development. He noted that over 800 million people worldwide still live in extreme poverty, unemployment remains high in many countries, and millions are forced to migrate in search of decent work.

Nepal’s Efforts for Social Justice

President Poudel emphasized that Nepal has prioritized poverty alleviation by promoting employment, entrepreneurship, and digital economy through skill development. He said Nepal’s constitution guarantees social justice and inclusion, and the contribution-based social security program is being expanded to cover informal and self-employed workers.

Rise in Representation of Marginalized Groups

He informed that the presence of women, Dalits, indigenous communities, and other marginalized groups in public services and education has significantly increased. However, he stressed the need for more efforts to improve living standards, create attractive jobs within the country, and ensure meaningful participation.

Call for Global Cooperation

President Poudel urged the international community to strengthen global solidarity to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and support least developed and vulnerable countries. He said Nepal is committed to working together with the global community.

President's Visit to Qatar

President Poudel arrived in Doha on Monday at the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to participate in the summit, which began on November 18. He was welcomed at Hamad International Airport by officials from Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nepali Embassy. The President is scheduled to return to Nepal on Kartik 20 after the completion of the conference.
